North Park Presbyterian Church, a member of Lake Michigan Presbytery, was organized in 1914. The original church started at the North Park School in 1910. The cornerstone was laid at the present site on November 26, 1921, followed by dedication in September 1923. The present Sanctuary was built in 1960 and dedicated in 1963.
How we started:
The following is quoted from an article from the Grand Rapids Herald, Sunday, October 1, 1939 concerning the church's Silver Jubilee.
"History of the North Park church is unique in the fact that the initiative for its organization came from the residents of the community rather than from any outside church group. In true democratic fashion, the denomination of the church was decided by ballot.
The North Park Ladies Circle is credited with being the motivating force in the formation of the church. On April 27, 1912, Mrs. Georgia Hubbard invited a group of women of the community to her home on Coit Road for the purpose of organizing a Neighborhood club. Interest in the organization mounted and in 1914, the club, which had changed its name from the North Park circle to the North Park Ladies circle, voted to identify itself with a church. Subsequent meetings were held resulting in the organization of the church and the decision to affiliate with the Presbyterian church.
In the early days, supply pastors served the church which held services in the old North Park school which occupied the site of the present M.L. Sterken residence on Kendalwood Dr. The present fine modern church structure, which was inspired by a noted English chapel, was erected in 1922." |
